It seems like most musicians are PSYCHED when they hear that
WEIRD AL YANKOVIC wants to parody one of their songs. But there are
exceptions, like PRINCE . . . who NEVER let Weird Al touch his music.
He said, quote, “I had a parody of ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ that was about ‘The Beverly
Hillbillies’. And I wanted to do something funny with ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Kiss’.
For ‘1999’ I wanted to do an infomercial where you could get anything you wanted
by dialing 1-800-something-1999.” He eventually gave up asking several decades
ago. And now, it’ll NEVER happen.
It’s interesting that Prince wouldn’t have a sense of humor about all that, since he
LOVED the “Chappelle’s Show” skit about his basketball game with Eddie
Murphy’s crew. But maybe it’s because that had nothing to do with his MUSIC.
It’s also interesting because even KURT COBAIN let Al parody “Smells Like Teen
Spirit”. Al said, quote, “He asked if it was going to be a song about food.” (???)
Weird Al did eventually do his “Beverly Hillbillies” parody, but it was to “Money for
Nothing” by DIRE STRAITS. It was in his hugely underrated movie “UHF”.
