Looks like all those craft beer drinkers are good for Ontario farming. In the last 4 years the amount of hops yards has gone from 5 to 80, making it one of the biggest growth crops in the province. One of the difficulties with the crop is that, much like grapes for wine, hops can take years before it can be used for it’s purpose: BEER!
Even though the amount of hops being made here is increasing, it’s nowhere near where it needs to be for breweries to buy local; about 99% still comes from Europe and America.
The CBC did a neat story about the boom and some success for a couple brothers who wanted into the beer world. See it right here.
